How to encode and decode Base64URL

  1. Choose Encode for text or Decode for a Base64URL string.
  2. Paste the content. Leave padding off unless the receiving system requires = characters.
  3. Copy the result. For a complete JWT, use the JWT decoder instead of pasting all three parts here.

Working with Base64URL Encoder & Decoder

Base64URL replaces + and / with - and _. Padding is optional in many protocols. Choose this form for URL parameters and token segments, but follow the padding rules of the receiving system.

Questions about Base64URL Encoder & Decoder

How does Base64URL differ from Base64?

Base64URL uses - instead of + and _ instead of /. Padding may be omitted when the receiving format allows it. The decoded bytes are the same.

Does Base64URL need = padding?

Not always. JWT uses unpadded Base64URL, while other systems may expect padding. This encoder omits it by default; the decoder accepts valid padded and unpadded input.

Is Base64URL the same as URL encoding?

No. Base64URL represents bytes with a URL-safe alphabet. URL encoding escapes characters as percent sequences such as %20. Use the URL encoder for query values and form fields.

Can I decode a whole JWT here?

A JWT has separate dot-delimited parts. Decode a single Base64URL part here, or use the JWT tool to inspect the header and payload together. Decoding does not verify a signature.

Are my files, tokens or text uploaded?

No. These tools process your input in your browser. The website serves the page and its code, but your input is not sent to a conversion server or saved in an account.

  • Base64 Encoder & Decoder

Encode UTF-8 text to Base64 or decode standard and URL-safe Base64. Control padding and line wrapping.

  • JWT Decoder

Read JWT headers and payloads, inspect expiry and activation times, and view claims without sending your token anywhere.

  • URL Encoder & Decoder

Encode and decode URL components, complete URLs and form values. Handle percent escapes and spaces correctly.

Common tasks and examples

  • Base64 Decoder

Decode Base64 to readable UTF-8 text, or download the original bytes.
