How to inspect or convert Unicode

  1. Paste text to inspect or encode, or paste Unicode escape sequences to decode.
  2. Choose inspection for code points and bytes, encoding for \uXXXX output, or decoding to restore text.
  3. Run the tool and copy the result. Check combining marks and emoji separately when debugging character differences.

Working with Unicode Inspector & Escape Converter

An emoji may use two UTF-16 units, and a visible symbol can contain several code points. This tool shows code points rather than claiming they are grapheme clusters. It rejects unpaired surrogates instead of silently replacing them.

Questions about Unicode Inspector & Escape Converter

Why can one visible character produce several rows?

Each row represents a code point, not a complete visible symbol. An accented letter can combine a letter and a mark; an emoji can combine several code points with a zero-width joiner. For example, รฉ and e plus U+0301 can look alike but contain different sequences.

What is the difference between a code point, UTF-8 and UTF-16?

U+1F44B identifies ๐Ÿ‘‹. UTF-8 represents it as four bytes, f0 9f 91 8b; UTF-16 uses two units, d83d dc4b. JavaScript string length counts UTF-16 units, so this emoji has length 2, even though it is one code point.

Which Unicode escapes can I decode?

The decoder accepts \u4e2d, \u{1F44B} and paired sequences such as \ud83d\udc4b. Encoding produces \uXXXX sequences, including a pair for supplementary characters. Incomplete escapes, out-of-range values and unpaired surrogates are rejected.

Does this decode every JavaScript string or fix garbled text?

No. It converts Unicode escapes without executing code, but is not a full JavaScript or JSON string parser. It leaves \n, \t and \x41 unchanged and does not decode bare U+0041. Use the URL tool for %41 and the HTML entity tool for A. Conversion does not normalise text or repair incorrectly decoded file encodings.

Are my files, tokens or text uploaded?

No. These tools process your input in your browser. The website serves the page and its code, but your input is not sent to a conversion server or saved in an account.

  • Base64 Encoder & Decoder

Encode UTF-8 text to Base64 or decode standard and URL-safe Base64. Control padding and line wrapping.
