How to compare two texts

  1. Paste the original into the first input and the updated version into the comparison input.
  2. Choose lines for code or lists, words for prose, or characters for small spelling and number changes.
  3. Run the comparison and review the highlighted additions and deletions. Change the mode and compare again for a different level of detail.

Working with Text Diff Checker

Line comparison works well for source files and configuration changes; character comparison helps find small edits. Input is compared literally, including whitespace. Very large or complex comparisons are stopped to keep the browser responsive.

Questions about Text Diff Checker

Should I compare by line, word or character?

Line mode highlights whole changed lines, useful for code, logs and lists. Word mode narrows changes within sentences and retains whitespace. Character mode helps locate a changed digit or letter. Emoji and combining marks may contain several code points; use the Unicode inspector when their appearance is misleading.

Does the comparison ignore spaces, line endings or letter case?

No. Spaces, tabs, line endings and letter case remain part of the comparison. Text that looks identical may contain different invisible characters. Word mode is not a language-aware grammar analyser. If an entire line is highlighted, try character mode to find the smaller difference.

Can I compare JSON or source code?

Yes, as pasted text. JSON is compared as text, not as equivalent data: indentation and key order can produce differences. Format both inputs with the same JSON settings first if you want a cleaner comparison. This tool does not execute code, validate program behaviour or automatically merge changes.

Can I compare Word or PDF files and download a Git patch?

This page compares two pasted text inputs; it does not extract content from Word or PDF files. Copy and download provide the structured change list as JSON text, not a Git patch or a merged document. Large or very different inputs may hit a size or time limit; compare smaller sections instead.

Are my files, tokens or text uploaded?

No. These tools process your input in your browser. The website serves the page and its code, but your input is not sent to a conversion server or saved in an account.
